How 3x3
works.
The short version. Download the full rules for everything.
Court and ballHalf court, one basket. U12 size 5, U14 size 6, U16 boys size 7, U16 girls size 6.
Team roster4 players: 3 on court and 1 substitute.
RefereesOne referee per hoop. Two in the Grand Final.
ScorerEach team provides a scorer for the flip scoreboard and team fouls. One master timer runs every court.
Entry fee$90 per team.
Time outsNone in pool games. Grand Final: one 30 second time out per team, clock keeps running.
Possession and scoringCoin flip to start. 1 point inside the arc, 2 points behind it, 1 point per free throw.
Game length12 minute slot: 10 minutes of running time plus a 2 minute changeover. First to 21 wins straight away. Draws stand in pool games. A tied Grand Final goes to first to 2 points.
Shot clockNo formal shot clock. If a possession runs past about 15 seconds the referee counts down 5 seconds. No shot means possession to the other team.
Shooting foulsMade shot: basket counts plus 1 free throw. Missed inside the arc: 1 free throw. Missed behind the arc: 2 free throws.
Team fouls7th, 8th and 9th fouls: 2 free throws. From the 10th foul: 2 free throws plus possession.
After a basketCheck ball at the top of the arc.
After a rebound or stealClear the ball behind the arc before shooting.
SubstitutionsWhen the ball is dead, before a check ball or free throw. Enter from the top of the court. No need to tell the referee.
Late teamsThe clock starts on time. Teams get 2 minutes to field three players or the game is forfeited 21 to 0.
CoachingCoaches may call substitutions only, and do not coach during live play.
UniformsMatching team jerseys. No rep uniforms and no pockets. Reversibles only if the MBA confirms before the event.
Pools and standingsPools set by semi grading. Ties go to most wins, then head to head, then average points (max 21 a game), then seeding.
ProtestsRaise with the Competition Manager or duty supervisor straight after the game, before the result is confirmed. The decision is final.
